Conflict Resolution

Our ethos is based on conflict resolution – the constructive resolution of conflicts.

Breckenbrough has a unique 4 stage model of conflict resolution is based on four sessions.

Stage 1: A structure designed to reduce confrontation;

The atmosphere is deliberately relaxed. Rules are more like guidelines and are applied flexibly. There is a reluctance to use punishment.

Stage 2: De-escalation confrontations;

Our experienced staff use de-escalation techniques to calm confrontations. Pupils learn the skills of tolerance and forgiveness and are able to defuse situations themselves.

Stage 3: Conflict Resolution;

When the emotions have calmed staff facilitate the resolving of conflicts. Pupils are helped to understand why a conflict has developed and to explore ways of redressing any hurt that might have been caused and to develop strategies that might be helpful in reducing the likelihood of similar conflict being repeated.

Stage 4: Inner Conflict Resolution;

For some, just coming to Breckenbrough is enough to make pupils feel better about themselves. Others with the support of staff and in particular our therapeutic staff have the opportunity to work through inner problems and insecurities that they might have.

The core qualities required to deliver conflict resolution include the following;

  • Trust: staff have to generate an atmosphere where they are trusted primarily in believing in the good others and committed to finding constructive solutions.
  • Honesty: in particular being honest about one’s own shortcomings and to seek for the truth in a constructive way.
  • Forgiveness: the ability to forgive and move on without bitterness and the need for sanctions.
  • Toleration: allowing, accepting and where possible enjoying others being different.

Above all a willingness of all to change and grow.

The most important skills to identify the problem are active listening and detailed observations.
