Breckenbrough School

Introduction to Breckenbrough School for Pupils

You were there when I needed to learn,
you made sure I wouldn't crash and burn,
you were there when I had a 'stress',
to make sure I didn't turn out a mess.

If you come to Breckenbrough school, you could be with other boys who have the same special educational needs as you. There may be pupils with autistic spectrum disorders, Asperger's syndrome, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), ADD (attention deficit disorder), BESD (behavioural emotional and social difficulties) conduct disorders, attachment disorders and many more.

Breckenbrough helps pupils to achieve those things that they could have done without the problems they have experienced. This helps them to be ready to leave school with the academic qualifications and the confidence to move towards adult life.

Life at Breckenbrough is not in any way dull!

In your lessons ...

  • There will not be many other boys in your group (no more than 7).
  • In the lessons that you find difficult teachers will help you find ways of doing better.
  • You will be able to choose a Mentor, who is a member of staff who you can talk to about how well you are doing and help you find ways of doing things better.
  • If you want you can have individual help in Maths and English if you find these difficult.
  • If you like a subject and are doing well then you can take the GCSE before Year 11.
  • In each classroom there are learning units so that you can have your own space to do your work so that you are not as distracted by the other boys.
  • There are computers attached to the internet in every classroom.
  • In some of your English lessons you will do Drama. There is a school play at Christmas time, and a Words and Music Evening at Easter.
  • You will get more Art lessons that at mainstream schools. The Art room is spacious and is beside a garden. Music is usually on and you are given the space to do the Art of your choice.
  • We have a music suite with lots of keyboards, a synthesiser, guitar and drum kit.
  • There is a big CDT room. Like with Art you will get more lessons than in a mainstream and much less design. You will spend most of your time making things, often things of your choice.
  • One day a week you go out of school to do 'Out door Education' activities such as climbing, canoeing, caving, cycling.
  • In the summer the whole school does a long walk, there are activity camps an in winter ski trip for senior boys.

Out of school ...

  • The school is divided into units where you can go when you are not in lessons. On the unit there is a TV room, a small kitchen area and a room to play computer games.
  • There are a number of single and double bedrooms. You can decorate on your own room within reason. You can bring things from home to put in your room but with your parents permission.
  • Immediately after lessons there are shopping trips to the local towns.
  • In the evenings there are lots of activities, such as snooker, pool and various other sports. Some evenings the motorbikes are on. Teachers open their classrooms. There can be swimming trips or visits to the cinema and theatre.
  • You do not have to do an activity, you can play in the grounds, watch telly or just 'jelly' on computer games.
  • You have to go to bed at 9.00pm for Juniors and 10.00pm for Seniors.
  • You get up full of enthusiasm at 7.45am for cooked breakfast at 8.15am. All meals are in the dining room. There is a choice of food at most meal times.
  • We have Assembly every morning in the Great Hall.
