Introduction from the Deputy Headmaster

Breckenbrough has a long history in helping young people who have had severe problems in mainstream education through its unique philosophy. Today it is particularly successful with young people diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.

The school, located just outside Thirsk in North Yorkshire, is a small residential special school for boys who have been identified with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. All boys have academic potential, all have a particular talent or skill and all want to succeed educationally and socially.

The school has provision for full boarding (38 weeks), weekly boarding and day placements.

The school is a Quaker Charitable Trust, founded in the 1930’s. The school has recently opened a post 16 provision and now caters for boys between the ages of 9 and 19.

Over 75% of the pupils have a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. Others may also have, or have a separate diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia and / or dyscalculia. All have suffered from emotional, social and behavioural problems. For more details see ‘Our Boys’.
