DISCIPLINARY LITERACY
At Breckenbrough, all students will be given the opportunity to realise their literacy potential through a strategic approach to improving reading, writing and oracy. Each subject area has a responsibility to impart literary understanding about their subject content through targeted approaches as outlined in the EEF framework and research. Although not exhaustive, each subject area will use the following approaches to improve literacy across the curriculum.
The EEF and Research to base our actions upon
Underpinning all this work will be a research-based approach using the EEF toolkit where appropriate. The EEF provide us with 7 recommendations for improving reading and literacy in the classroom

Alongside our reading/literacy whole school strategy, we always look to encourage our students to read for pleasure, as this can often be the catalyst to better engagement with more complex texts within school. We do acknowledge that this can be difficult at times, as some students can be reluctant to read in their spare time and find reading to be anxiety inducing and stressful, rather than pleasurable. In many cases, a student can have a fear of reading based on traumatic experiences in previous settings. In order to promote reading for pleasure, we use several various activities shown below that showcase reading in a number of ways.
