Statement of intent

Breckenbrough School is a specialist institution dedicated to supporting students with a diagnosis of Autism. Our students face significant barriers to learning due to their complex needs, all of which are outlined in their Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). As staff, we understand that our students experience multiple challenges, the most prevalent being:

  • High levels of anxiety.
  • Difficulties in developing communication and interpersonal independence skills.
  • Gaps in formal education due to inconsistent schooling in the past.
  • Low aspirations stemming from negative experiences in previous educational settings.

At Breckenbrough, our mission is to enable every pupil to realise their full potential. While our strategy places a particular emphasis on the needs of disadvantaged students, the benefits extend to all students through whole-school initiatives. These include the pursuit of high-quality teaching and learning practices, as well as the implementation of tailored, evidence-based interventions.

We recognise the importance of pupil premium funding in achieving and sustaining positive outcomes for disadvantaged students. Although socio-economic disadvantage is not always the primary challenge for our students, data and experience reveal disparities in outcomes for disadvantaged students compared to their peers. To address these, our strategy focuses on several key areas where disadvantage can have an impact:

  • Academic attainment
  • Attendance
  • Independent living skills
  • Social progress and quality of life
  • Progression to further and higher education
  • Employability

Our approach is guided by the unique needs and strengths of each young person. By leveraging both evidence-based practices and our extensive experience, we aim to enhance teaching, provide targeted support, and deliver timely interventions that drive positive outcomes for all students.
