This activity is a firm favourite with our students. We get to explore lots of different locations and it provides many  opportunities for learning. Riding bikes naturally promotes good physical  and mental health through exercise. The students will develop riding skills, co-ordination, balance, resilience  and risk awareness. Students have to demonstrate they can take on board instructions and be responsible. Risk management is a key part of the session and students encouraged to identify risk and come up with ways to stay safe. Non rider

Further opportunities for learning:

·         History, e.g. looking at old railways, York walls

·         D.T. e.g. Bike maintenance

·         Maths, e.g. working out speeds and distance

·         Environmental, e.g. spotting wildlife, promoting green travel

We recently updated the fleet of bikes with modern “Hardtails”. They have front suspension , disc brakes and easy to use gears. Students must wear helmets and gloves.

Staff are qualified Mountain Bike Instructors and actively participate in the sport in their own time.

Locations:

The school is centrally located around a host of great riding venues. We choose locations depending on the weather, technicality , riding surface and the group ability. We mainly stick to traffic free venues, though we do occasionally ride across or along short sections of highway.  As there are often a range of abilities we try to accommodate by choosing locations that offer something for everyone.

Example locations:

·         Sutton Bank, great for all abilities with easy wide tracks, scenic single track route, skills area and pumptrack.

·         Ripley Cycle Way, this is a Sustrans route following the old railway, great for a non-technical journey
