Paddle sports are one of our main activities and very popular with the students. We use a fleet of Canadian style open canoes and Sit-on-top kayaks. A canoe is paddled with a single bladed paddle and a kayak by a double paddle. Kayaks are paddled solo and a Canoe can be paddled solo or with multiple people on-board. We generally use the Kayaks more in summer as they are more likely to capsize, which make for great fun on hot sunny days. Canoes can be used year round and if conditions dictate, we can lash them together creating a stable craft that will not capsize. A paddling session can take many forms. We can use the craft to take part in journeys, exploring the environment or we can stay at a location to practice skills, play games and have fun.

The Lead staff are all qualified paddling instructors.  Students wear appropriate safety equipment including Buoyancy Aids and Helmets.

Students get to experience the thrill, fun and novelty that comes from “messing about in boats”. Students learn physical skills such as paddle strokes, balance, coordination tying knots. The activity develops teamwork, communication and  promotes self-confidence.

Further opportunities for learning:

·         Geography e.g. River features, water use

·         Science e.g. Wildlife, pollution, bio diversity

·         History  e.g. Canals and rivers for transport

Students may progress to learn more advance skills that allow them to access more challenging conditions like white water. Canoeing and Kayaking are  well established sports and there are opportunities to engage in the sport outside of school through clubs and local providers.

Locations:

We are very lucky to have several different locations near school that offer excellent options for water activities.

River Ure:

We can use various sections of this local river, it is wide and slow moving and allows us to explore the country side.

Givendale Lake: located next to the river near Ripon. This Lake is close to school and we often have sole use.

Ellerton Lake: A former Gravel Quarry, now a private activity lake near Catterick. This Lake is fabulous in summer when we intend to get wet. The lake is fed by a spring meaning the water is crystal clear, allowing us to see the fish!.

Ripon Canal: This short section of the Canal connects Ripon to the Rive Ure navigation. Close to school and offers the unique experience of Urban paddling into the city. It’s a great venue if the weather is poor as its sheltered. Students get to see the locks, canal boats and the Wharf.
